Heat Pump Frozen Over?

Half the heat pumps in Central Arkansas wear a coat of frost on a January morning — and most of them are perfectly fine. Here's how to tell healthy frost from a machine that's icing itself to death.

Quick Answer

A light, even frost that melts off every hour or two is normal — the defrost cycle handles it (steam rising off the unit is that cycle working, not a fire). A solid ice shell, ice that lasts for hours, or ice climbing the refrigerant lines means something's wrong: usually a failed defrost control, low refrigerant, a stuck outdoor fan, or blocked airflow around the unit.

What to Do, In Order

1. Watch one defrost cycle

Give the unit 90 minutes. A healthy heat pump notices the frost, switches into defrost (you'll hear a whoosh as it reverses, see steam, and the indoor air runs cool briefly), and comes back clear. If the frost melts and re-forms lightly, everything is doing its job.

2. Clear what's blocking the unit

Leaves piled against the coil, a tarp, shrubs grown tight, or roof runoff dripping onto the top of the unit and freezing — all of it chokes airflow and builds ice. Keep two feet clear on every side and fix the drip line above it (a gutter fix has saved more than one 'broken' heat pump).

3. Check the filter and vents inside

Weak airflow inside makes the system run long, cold cycles that invite icing. Swap a dirty filter and open blocked return vents. It's the cheapest fix in HVAC and it's behind more freeze-ups than anyone believes.

4. Never chip the ice

Screwdrivers, hammers, and boiling water kill coils and fins — we replace a few every winter that would have survived their ice. If you must melt it, switch the thermostat to 'emergency heat' so the outdoor unit rests, and let the ice thaw on its own.

5. Solid ice again within a day? That's a diagnosis, not weather

A defrost board or sensor that never triggers, refrigerant low enough to drop coil temperature below design, or an outdoor fan motor giving up — each one rebuilds the ice shell fast, and each one is a technician fix. Running a heat pump caked in ice grinds the compressor toward a four-figure failure, so this is a same-day call, not a spring project.

Meanwhile, use emergency heat — briefly

The EM HEAT setting keeps the house warm on backup electric strips while the outdoor unit is down. It works, but it burns power at several times the heat pump's rate — fine for a night, painful on the bill for a week. It's the bridge to the repair, not the repair.
