The Causes, In the Order to Check
1. Clogged filter → overheat trip
Starved airflow makes heat pile up in the furnace until the high-limit switch panics and shuts the burners down. It cools, restarts, overheats, repeats. Pull the filter: if you can't see light through it, replace it and give the system a half hour. This is the #1 cause and the cheapest fix in heating.
2. Dirty flame sensor
A flame sensor coated in a season of grime can't confirm the burners lit, so the furnace shuts gas off within seconds — sometimes running only a minute or two. The tell: it dies fast and consistently. Cleaning one takes a technician minutes; it's a staple of every tune-up for a reason.
3. Blocked intake or exhaust pipe
High-efficiency furnaces breathe through PVC pipes that exit the side of the house. A bird nest, wasp nest, leaves, or ice over either end trips the pressure switch and kills the cycle. Walk outside and look — clearing one is fair DIY if it's reachable.
4. Thermostat lying about the room
A thermostat over a supply vent, in direct sun, or near the kitchen satisfies fast and shuts the heat down while the bedrooms are still cold. Watch what the thermostat reads versus a cheap thermometer across the room — if they disagree, the thermostat's location (or its aging sensor) is the problem.
5. It's always done this: the furnace may be oversized
A furnace too big for the house slams the temperature up, shuts off, and repeats all day — comfort swings, cold corners, high bills, short equipment life.
