Furnace Blower Hums But the Fan Won't Spin?
That hum is good news in disguise: the motor is getting power. Something is just keeping it from starting — and the most common something costs less than a tank of gas.

A blower that hums but won't spin is most often a failed run capacitor — the small cylinder that gives the motor its starting kick. Without it the motor buzzes, gets hot, and never turns. The other two causes, roughly in order: seized or worn bearings (the motor physically can't turn), and a jammed or dirt-packed blower wheel. Turn the furnace off so the motor doesn't cook itself, then call.
Do not reach in and spin the fan by hand while it's humming. The motor can start without warning, and capacitors hold a charge even with the power off.
The 3 Causes, Most to Least Likely
1. Failed run capacitor (the usual suspect)
The capacitor stores the burst of energy that starts the motor and helps it run efficiently. They weaken with age and Arkansas heat, and when one goes, the motor hums at full voltage but can't overcome its own inertia. Tell-tale signs: the hum starts every time the furnace calls for heat, then stops after a minute or two when the motor's thermal protection trips. This is a quick, inexpensive, one-visit repair — the part rides on every Jet truck.
2. Seized or worn motor bearings
Older blower motors have bearings that dry out or wear flat. The motor wants to turn but physically can't, so it hums and heats up. You may have heard it getting louder or squealing over the past few weeks. A seized motor means a motor replacement — still a same-day job on most furnaces, and we'll tell you honestly whether the rest of the furnace justifies it.
3. Blower wheel jammed or caked with dirt
Years of dust build up on the wheel's fins and can bind it against the housing; occasionally something falls into the cabinet. The motor is fine, the wheel just can't move. Cleaning or freeing the wheel fixes it — and a clean wheel moves noticeably more air afterward.
Less common: control board or motor module
Some furnaces hum from a relay on the control board or a failed module on an ECM (variable-speed) motor. These are technician diagnoses with a meter — the fix is different from a capacitor, which is exactly why guessing at parts wastes money.
What's Safe to Do Yourself
Turn it off — first, before anything
Flip the furnace's power switch (looks like a light switch, on or beside the unit) to OFF, and turn off its breaker too. A humming motor that can't spin is overheating; leaving it on can cook the windings and turn a capacitor job into a motor job.
Check the filter and look at the wheel — power OFF
With power off, pull the lower door and look at the blower. A filter so clogged it collapsed, or a wheel packed with gray fuzz, tells you a lot. Look; don't pry, poke, or spin anything.
Try one power-cycle — and only one
Power back on for one heat cycle. If the blower starts, a marginal capacitor or a stuck relay caught a break — it will fail again soon, so book a tune-up while it's cheap. If it hums again, turn it off and leave it off.
