Furnace Leaking Water?
A puddle around the furnace surprises people — furnaces make heat, not water, right? Modern ones actually make both. Here's where that water comes from, why it's on your floor, and what to do about it today.
Quick Answer
A high-efficiency furnace (white PVC pipes on the side) pulls so much heat from the exhaust that the moisture condenses — gallons of it a day, all supposed to leave through a condensate drain. A puddle means that drain path failed: a clogged drain line or trap, a failed condensate pump, a cracked drain pan or fitting, or — on standard furnaces — it's often not the furnace at all but the AC coil above it or a nearby humidifier.

The Usual Sources, In Order
1. Clogged condensate drain line or trap
The #1 cause. That acidic condensate breeds algae and sludge that plug the little trap and tubing, and water backs up out the nearest opening. If you can see the drain tubing, check it for kinks and gunk; some traps unscrew for rinsing. This is also the clog a First Class Club fall visit clears before it ever puddles.
2. Failed condensate pump
No floor drain nearby? A small box pumps the water out. When its float sticks or the pump dies, the reservoir overflows quietly. If the box is full and silent, unplug it and stop the furnace — that's your culprit, and it's an inexpensive same-day replacement.
3. Cracked pan, loose fitting, or split tubing
Ten winters of acidic water are hard on plastic. Hairline cracks in the drain pan or a fitting that's worked loose leak slowly and rot the floor under the unit. The fix is cheap; finding it is the technician's trick.
4. It might not be the furnace at all
On standard-efficiency furnaces (metal flue, no PVC), the furnace itself makes no water. The puddle usually comes from the AC evaporator coil sitting on top of it, a whole-home humidifier mounted beside it, or — worst case — a flue problem letting exhaust condense where it shouldn't. That last one deserves professional eyes: exhaust condensation corrodes the vent from the inside.
5. Turn it off if water is reaching electronics
Water plus a control board is how a $150 drain problem becomes a $700 repair. If the puddle is spreading toward the furnace's base, cabinet, or any wiring, shut the system off at the switch, mop up, and put towels down — then call. You'll save the expensive parts.
Why a "little water" isn't little

It's the subfloor swelling under the furnace, the mold that starts in a damp closet, and the control board that shorts when the backup finally overtops the pan.
